"The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone," writes Peter Beagle in THE LAST UNICORN. "She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea."

I love the way Peter Beagle showers the character he's describing with unadorned affection. So let's use a chapter from his great book to guide us to treat one of our own characters---or even ourselves---with similar affection.

I'll be with you every step of the way, offering suggested frames through which you can throw your narrative. (You can follow my directions to the letter, or ignore me completely. My aim is simply to keep you writing.)
