THE HEROINE'S JOURNEY is a trusted story structure that uses adversity as the engine for your narrator's journey, whether she is fictional or non-fictional. You start where you are -- your parents' home, your corporate cubicle -- get thrust into the greater world, encounter all kinds of obstacles, grow as a result, and come back to your tribe a different, larger person than when you left.
In short, it's the story of every growth spurt in our lives. It's PERFECT for folks staring at a life transition: You can use the HEROINE'S JOURNEY to look back at all you've just come through, or use it to prepare for the future (it can truly prime your subconscious to bring about the best possible outcome! I've seen it work beautifully this way!)
This series uses my tried-and-true method of chunking down great scenes from literature to guide us into fresh and visceral writing. You'll get the reading material for our first class upon registering for this class; after that, you'll get it a week ahead of time, along with the prompt sheet I'll use to guide you through your writing for about 90 minutes in class. (This way, planners can plan. But if you just want to read the source material and wing it in class, that's just fine.)
We’ll meet on Zoom on Friday mornings, 9-11:30 a.m. MOUNTAIN TIME, (which is 8-10:30 a.m. Pacific, 10-12:30 Central & 11-1:30 Eastern.)
The dates are: Oct. 13 & 20 (no class on Oct. 27,) Nov. 3, 10, 17 (No class Nov. 24,) Dec. 1, 8 & 15. I’ll tape each class for anyone who misses it. No makeup classes.
I only offer refunds for true medical emergencies, so please be sure this class is for you if you haven't worked with me before. (Sylvan Dale alums, this will be a bit similar in structure to THE LONELY POLYGAMIST in which I chunked down the larger piece into four pieces -- although in this class it'll be more like 10 steps.) This sample class will give you a perfect preview of what's ahead, or you can contact me here to set up a phone chat.
Who's the teacher? Me, Lisa Jones, author of the award-winning memoir, BROKEN: A Love Story. I've taught creative writing for 15 years. You can read more about my classes at my website here.
I'd love to see you in class!
I'll limit this class to eight students; if we get six or more I'll likely break you into two groups when its time to read, so you can have ample time.
8 classes, $640.
